This coastal area of northeastern Florida is quite urban and not far from other major Floridian cities including Gainesville and Orlando. Off Post Housing

Housing here is not hard to find. This is one of the largest cities in the U.S. in size and population (well over 800,000), making off post housing nearly endless. An average price of a home for sale in Jacksonville is about $157,000, compared to the Florida state average of $171,000.

Rent in Duval County will cost about $900 to $1200 per month for a 2-3 bedroom apartment.

This area of northeastern Florida is situated on the St. Johns River near the border with Georgia along the Atlantic Ocean. Though the city is plenty large, some families may choose to live in the surrounding suburbs. On the southern side of Jacksonville are the towns of Orange Park (8,400 people), Lakeside (31,000), and Palm Valley (20,000). Yulee, 11,500 residents, is north of base. These suburbs are 20-40 minutes outside of downtown.

The city itself is broken down into hundreds of different neighborhoods; the biggest of these are Avondale, San Marco, LaVilla, Riverside, Brooklyn, and Eastside. On Post Housing

NAS Jacksonville on base housing is privatized and owned by Balfour Beatty Communities. There are 430 units in 3 neighborhoods: Patriots Point and River Oaks are on base and Yellow Water is 30 minutes off base. The on base housing has 3-5 bedroom single family or duplexes with storage sheds and fully-equipped kitchens while Yellow Water offers 3-4 bedroom townhomes. Homes will be assigned based on service member's rank and number of dependents.
